    Patents

Patents protect new products and processes, and their success is often shown by how well they are accepted in the market. At Hanna & Bird IP, we help you identify what makes your product or technology unique. We honestly assess its potential for valuable patent protection.

Typically, valuable patents are found in products or processes that are user-friendly, easy to produce, or deliver better results.

We assist you throughout the patent granting process and can represent you in patent disputes at both local and international levels if needed. We are willing to meet with you at a convenient time, aligning with your research and development schedule.

    Designs

The value of your product often lies in its appearance. This creative work can be protected. We assist you throughout the creative process—from initial sketches to prototyping, market testing, and sales or licensing—to establish a design protection strategy that aligns with your launch timelines.

There are two types of design protection: unregistered and registered.

Unregistered design rights are automatically granted when you document your design. However, if someone else uses your design, you must prove they copied it.

Registered design rights offer stronger protection and can be obtained nationally, regionally, or internationally. With registered rights, you don’t need to prove copying, as long as the other party creates their design after you register yours.

    Trade Marks

Most of our commercial clients use a trademark for their business. A trademark is a recognizable sign for your company or product, which can include letters, words, shapes, logos, colors, sounds, or combinations of these. Trademarks help identify your brand in a crowded market. Thus, registering your trademark is crucial to protect the value you've built.

The main purpose of your trademark is to help customers find and trust your product or service again based on that mark. This leads to repeat business. Your trademark, along with your branding, is essential for showing where your product or service comes from.

We offer a detailed analysis of your chances of getting trademark protection and the risks of infringing on others' rights. We support you throughout the trademark registration process and can represent you in trademark disputes, both locally and internationally.

    Copyright

All arts are creative expressions of the human mind, shown through writing, sound, movement, 3D forms, and multimedia. These creations, called works, can be poems, songs, or buildings. Copyright protects how ideas are expressed, not the ideas or facts themselves. For instance, if five artists paint a bowl of fruit, each will have their own unique interpretation. They will own the copyright for their individual expressions, but not for the bowl of fruit itself.

In the UK and Ireland, copyright automatically exists when a work is created. The copyright symbol © is often added to show the work is protected, along with the author's name and creation year.

Artists and creators often approach us when they suspect their copyright has been violated. We will guide you through your options to achieve the best result.

    IP Advisory

Hanna & Bird IP regularly advise companies on best IP practices. We conduct IP Audits and training sessions to ensure IP is correctly owned, captured, and protected.

We also provide in-house IP services for companies without permanent IP departments. This can be more cost-effective for companies with a developed or rapidly growing IP portfolio.

Another aspect of our advisory work involves conducting due diligence of IP portfolios to inform investment or acquisition decisions.

Our team has first hand experience working in-house for startups to secure IP rights and leverage them to secure funding and drive growth.

We know the cost and time pressures that startup founders are under. Hanna & Bird provides a bespoke, fixed fee, program to enable startups to understand the IP landscape for the space they operate in, build an IP strategy, and secure their first patent application.
